Pets and Home Renovations
Pets rule the roost when it comes to home renovations
The majority of pet owners reportedly prioritise their pets when making decisions about their home renovations, according to new research.
Design platform Houzz has just released the findings of its 2024 UK Houzz Pets & the Home Study, which surveyed more than 1,600 pet owners about how much, if at all, their furry friends influence their home design choices.
More than half (53%) said that the needs of pets were prioritised when designing home spaces. One-in-three said that these considerations included pet-friendly products and materials, and 28% said that they included design elements specifically for their pet, such as incorporating room for an animal bed.
Almost one-in-ten of respondents said that they prioritised their pets so much that they specifically added built-in areas as part of their home renovations. The most popular of these were sleeping or relaxation areas (61%), feeding stations (37%), and pet furniture (16%).
While renovations are being carried out, roughly two-thirds of pet owners (63%) said that they made special arrangements for pets while work was being carried out within the home. Almost one-in-ten even said that they temporarily moved their animal out of the home while renovation projects were taking place.
Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist, commented: “As pet ownership rates continue to increase, we’re seeing an impact on home renovation decisions.
“Whether selecting pet-friendly materials or incorporating built-in feeding stations and cosy nooks, homeowners are designing spaces that prioritise the needs of all family members, including pets. This highlights the important role pets play in shaping how people invest in and customise their homes, often with the help of professionals”
Earlier this year, Houzz also released the results of its 2024 Houzz & Home study, which found that UK homeowner spending on renovation projects has “surged” over the last three years.
